Brain-based therapy is used to help clients who may want to explore different types of therapy outside of traditional talk therapy. This type of therapy can help assist the client with processing past traumas. If you're interested in Brainspotting therapy, B'well Counseling Services can help.
What is the Difference Between the Two?
EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, has been used since the 1980s. It allows individuals to tap into non-verbal information that is stored in different parts of their brain. Both EMDR and Brainspotting therapy revolve around the client's vision. EMDR uses eye movement as a form of bilateral stimulation while Brainspotting therapy requires the eye to be in a fixed gaze position. The gaze of the eyes unlocks insights that have not been recognized.
Is Brainspotting Therapy Better Than EMDR?
While EMDR has been around longer and is, therefore, better known, Brainspotting is quickly gaining popularity. David Grand discovered Brainspotting while he was training in other modalities and grew it out of his EMDR work. Brainspotting is more flexible and is often more powerful than EMDR methods, which means it'll look different for each client. Overall, a therapist and client will work together to find the position of the eye that triggers a specific emotional incident or response. Once the position is found, the client's brain will process this event. Brainspotting proves to yield faster and deeper results over EMDR because it's so adaptable. Therapists can work with each individual in their own way to find the "target and to customize the therapy sessions to work best for each individual. Another benefit of Brainspotting is that it is less stimulating than EMDR, which makes it a better fit for those who can become easily overwhelmed. Also, Brainspotting does not require much talking, so it is a good option for those who don't engage in talk therapy.
