What is Hypochondria?

What is hypochondria? | Telehealth Therapy | B'well Counseling Services

When a person keeps going to the doctor or hospital despite doctors telling them they're fine, you might think doctors are misdiagnosing them. While this is certainly a possibility, the person may also be suffering from a condition called Hypochondria, which is something telehealth therapy can help with.

What is Hypochondria?

Hypochondria, or hypochondriasis, is the fear of having or developing a life-threatening illness. Many people with this disorder think a headache could be a sign of a tumor, or a stomachache could be cancer. If left untreated, Hypochondria can cause depression, social anxiety, and/or a panic disorder.

Signs and Symptoms of Hypochondria

If you think you might have Hypochondria, ask yourself these questions, or seek help via telehealth therapy:

  1. Are you afraid of going outside due to health risks?

  2. Do you see various doctors, and they all say the same thing?

  3. Do you look up symptoms and self-diagnosis?

  4. Do you talk obsessively about your health?

  5. Do you frequently check yourself for signs of sickness or disease?

What Causes Hypochondria?

The causes of this disorder aren't exactly known, but triggers include: Having a disease or illness that runs in the family.

  • Having a loved one die from an illness or disease that runs in the family

  • Having a scary or painful experience with a serious illness

  • Fear of germs.

Telehealth Therapy and Other Treatment Options

Physicians thought Hypochondria was untreatable in the past due to how strongly people believed they were chronically ill, regardless of what the lab results said. But, with new and improved advancements in technology and research on the condition, physicians are now able to make a bigger impact on patients' lives.

Many people who suffer from Hypochondria hate going out, especially during busy times of the day. Telehealth therapy sessions can happen at home. Remember, If you are suffering from a mental health crisis, it's okay to reach out for help. No one is perfect, and sometimes everybody needs someone to help them through a tough time.
