Traveling this Holiday Season? Don't Pack Anxiety!

Whether you are visiting family or heading on vacation, the holidays can mean it is time to travel. So, let's break it down: what’s making you anxious about the trip? Let's start by writing them all down and brainstorm how you could handle them. When I need help organizing my thoughts and worries, I make a list. That way I won't forget what's really important. Making a checklist of everything you need to pack and do before you leave can help you feel more prepared. Plan ahead and get familiar with where you are going. Do your research and have activities ready or book ahead. Have backup ideas set in place so that you can plan for the unexpected: Know that some things will likely happen that are out of your control. Check in with yourself often. If you are feeling stressed, reach out to a friend. You have a support system, so identify those you can call when feeling anxious.


The early bird gets the worm! Try to get to the airport, bus, or train station early so you don't feel rushed. Bring some comfort items that appeal to the 5 senses: a soft sweatshirt, lavender, calming images, your favorite snacks, or your favorite playlist. Just because you are leaving home, doesn't mean you have to leave your comfort behind. Home is a feeling as much as it is a place. You have the power to create this feeling and bring it with you on your trip.

It is also important to set boundaries. You may be traveling with a group or seeing people you may not get along with. Know that you can say no to things that don’t align with what you want your experience to be.


Get familiar with your coping skills. Think about what works for you. Breathing, meditating, coloring, affirmations, or visualization. Practice mindfulness before and during your trip. Stay hydrated and avoid drinking too much caffeine, it can worsen symptoms of anxiety. If you are feeling overwhelmed, take a moment and close your eyes and remember to take deep breaths. Perhaps use some of the TIPP exercises listed to help calm down. Another good way to stabilize is by listening to music or a podcast. Pack your headphones and keep your mind at ease. You got this!
