Preparing for Seasonal Depression


Seasonal depression, also commonly known we Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), occurs annually around the same time for most people. It can be due to light exposure, environmental triggers, or a number of other reasons. Most people experience seasonal affective disorder in the winter months, correlating with less time spent in the sun and being active. This is why scientists think it is linked to circadian rhythms. That being said, SAD can also cause spring and summer depression. Seasonal depression can be triggered by different things for different people.


Exercise Routine for Seasonal Depression


Having a regular exercise routine can help you boost your endorphins which are known to boost mood. Getting into a regular routine in the warmer months can help you carry that into the colder months when you may not be motivated to move your body. Here are a few exercises you could try!

1. Aerobic exercise, such as walking, running, or swimming

Spending time in nature and getting fresh air can help improve your mood. Maybe try sitting outside if it isn’t too cold yet. Another thing that may help reduce the symptoms on seasonal depression is time with friends or family. An idea to get you prepared for the depression season is to create an event calendar. Make plans ahead of time and ask your friends and family to keep you accountable for going.
