Hello! I am Dr. Joanna Hayward, and my patients call me Dr. Jo. I am the newest therapist at B’well, and I am so excited to be a part of this amazing team! I earned my PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Toledo, and I have worked in many different clinical settings. I landed at B’well because the core values of this company reflect my own, and I imagine that’s why you’re reading this as well!
What are values? Tough question! I think of values as ways of being with which we endeavor to stay aligned. They aren’t just goals that we check off, they are principles that we are always striving towards. For example, I value having a loving, connected relationship with my mother. So, I might set some goals to help make sure I stay aligned with this value. This might include calling her at least three times a week and spending 1:1 time together at least once a month. I can check those goals off my list as I do them, and I will never say “Well, I called that lady, so now that value is taken care of!” Instead, this value of having a strong connection with my mother is an ideal to which I will continue attending.
Values drive behavior. At least, they do when we are clear about what our values are, and are purposeful in living a life that is connected to our values as unique individuals. Think about it, at your times of feeling the most connected, fulfilled, and maybe even some of your happiest moments, were these times you were doing something you can’t even remember? Something that you fundamentally disagreed with? Something that just didn’t sit right with you? Something that didn’t align with how you want to be in this world? Or, did these moments occur when you were engaging in something that held true value for you? Maybe you showed up in a meaningful way for someone you care about. Maybe you value being honest with yourself and your confidants, and you shared something that made you feel vulnerable, even though that felt uncomfortable in the moment. Maybe you spent your time doing something challenging that brought you closer to a health or wellness goal. Maybe you ignored your to-do list, prioritized your self-care, and allowed yourself to rest and relax. Value-driven behavior can show up in a lot of different ways, and when it happens, it can be pretty magical.
Does exploring your values, and what is getting in the way of living a value driven life, feel like the right journey for you? Ready to get started? That’s where I come in! One of my goals as a therapist is to help my clients discover what their values are and then find ways, both small and large, to live in accordance with those values.
Whether you are going through any kind of life transition, are on a motherhood journey, are experiencing feelings of anxiety or depression, or are just looking for support to continue building the life you want, I am excited to get to know you, and grow that value-driven life!
Until then, Be Well.
